Meet the Coaches:

Brenda Villa, the most decorated female water polo player ever, a four-time Olympic medalist (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and London 2012) and three-time World Champion (2003, 2007, 2009), started swimming at age 6 with Commerce Aquatics in Commerce, California, and began playing water polo at age 8. Named the "FINA Female Water Polo Player of the Decade" for the 2000s, Brenda is an accomplished scorer and passer, and has competed with the USA Women’s national team for the last 16 years. As an undergraduate at Stanford University, she won the 2002 Peter J. Cutino Award as the top female college water polo player. Brenda also co-founded a non-profit, Project 2020, which strives to give access to aquatic sports to youth that would otherwise not have access to aquatic sports. Brenda looks forward to launching the new water polo program at Belle Haven pool.

Becky Seelos has been in and around water since she was a baby. She started off swimming competitively at age 6 and by the time she reached high school she was ready for something new; water polo stole her heart instantly! She has been playing water polo for 10 years, on a nationally ranked team at CSU Bakersfield (position: driver), and for fun with a masters team after college. Becky has coached both young kids, who know very little about the sport, and adult women with a several years of water polo experience. Becky has a true love for the sport and looks forward to introducing water polo to your swimmers and improving skills they already have.

Melissa Joy has grown up around the water; though, it wasn’t until high school that she was introduced to the truly awesome sport of water polo. Needless to say, she loved it! Melissa found her strength in the cage as goalie. Since discovering the sport, she can't get enough. She played for her high school team as well as various club teams around the Bay Area. Melissa also played a year for Occidental College and on club teams throughout college. Melissa can’t wait to be able to introduce the unique sport of water polo to the Mavericks!

Primarily a swim coach, Aaron Burrows has also spent many hours playing, studying and coaching water polo. Starting in high school, water polo beckoned and he was ready to extend his swimming skills and mix them with 12 years experience in baseball (throwing and catching) and 5 years of soccer (position, stamina, and plays). He took his skills to college and joined the Men's Club Water Polo program at CSU, Bakersfield. When he wasn't swimming for CSUB, he was playing water polo in tournaments and became assistant coach to the club. In 2002, Aaron became the assistant coaching for the CSUB Womens Div II Water Polo team under Head Coach Rafael Guijarro. Aaron loves to get in and play at every opportunity possible and share his passion, knowledge and skills with those that would love to learn the dynamic sport of water polo.
