Mavericks

The Menlo Mavericks is a year round swim team which aims to create a swimming community that is extremely positive about being in and around the water. We emphasize learning sound techniques through our committed and competent coaches in a pleasant and positive environment. With a team segmented into smaller groups to meet the needs of swimmers of all ability levels, the Menlo Mavericks receive the best quality of coaching, instruction, and fun.

The Menlo Mavericks program is for ages 5 to 18 years, and has three main objectives:

  1. Develop and foster a desire for life-long aquatic involvement.
  2. Refine swim skills in all four strokes including turns, dives, and relays.
  3. Instill the desire to improve ability through work, experience, and technique.

New Daily Strength Training Option
The Level 3 and Level 4 swimmers will now have a 30 minute strength training session each day from 5:00-5:30pm, before they enter the water, under the direction of Head Coach Aaron Burrows.  All swimmers need to arrive at the pool ready for outdoor physical conditioning.  Please bring athletic shoes (no sandals or bare feet), shorts or athletics pants, t-shirt and jacket if necessary.

Swimming is a very coordinated sport that requires balance, skill, athleticism, and muscular adaption. Swimming is such a unique sport requiring much of the bodies muscle use in the water to propel and create a faster swimmer. Being in an aquatic environment often requires swimmers to use land and gravity based activity to assist in building better balance and understanding of personal strength.

Menlo Mavericks dry land training offers the knowledge and application of specific skills needed to help create better swimmers and to prevent injuries both in the present and future. The training itself will consist of three major cores; cardio, strength, and power. Each core will allow swimmers to become more flexible, more balanced, and more conditioned to allow for increased technique and skill in the water.  We aspire to develop more confident, knowledgeable and stronger swimmers in and out of the water.

Registration
  1. Every swimmer in a session must be registered BEFORE they take part in any coached workout.
  2. There is a two-week trial period from the date of registration, during which fees are 100% refundable.
  3. Late entries into any session will have their fees pro-rated to the week they start.  There is no proration for kids leaving the session early or taking weeks off during the session

Coaching Staff

Melissa Joy, Pre-Mavericks and Level 1
Coach Melissa has always loved the water. She has been swimming since she was very young and has been a swim instructor for over 8 years. Melissa jumped into coaching Mavericks with two feet and has enjoyed (and is enjoying) every minute of it.

Melissa coaches our Pre-Mavericks and Level 1 swimmers.  She enjoys working with young swimmers to build on their love of swimming and team spirit. She believes that swimming is a great sport that encompasses both individual improvements along with an awesome team dynamic. Her goal is to have every swimmer advance their swimming ability as well as their confidence… and, of course, have a great time doing it!

Kaleb Allen, Level 2 and Level 2A
Kaleb Allen has been working in aquatics for nine years. He is an experienced lifeguard and swim instructor -- teaching and coaching are his passions. He swam for a USS year-round swim team for seven years and made the varsity swim team for his high school his sophomore year.  Kaleb says that he's thrilled to have joined Menlo Swim and Sport and be part of such an awesome team creating great programs for kids at an amazing facility.

Kaleb coaches Level 2 Advanced Mavericks, molding our young swimmers with competitive attitude, indomitable spirit, and solid strokes and turns. All while maintaining the fun and constructive learning environment that's the Mavericks hallmark. Kaleb particularly looks forward to developing swimmers into great teammates and instilling a lifelong passion for the water and wellness.

Aaron Burrows, Level 3 and Level 4
Aaron is a Bay Area native who started his love of swimming in San Jose as a child.  As he grew older, his enthusiasm to share what he had learned extended to teaching swimming lessons at the young age of fourteen.  As an adult Aaron swam for his college team in Bakersfield, returning to teaching lessons every summer. Also in college, Aaron began coaching for a local USS Club team in Bakersfield.

When Aaron started coaching a level 2 group, he really began to understanding the complexities of the sport of swimming. He started researching, listening and talking to experienced coaches and trainers to obtain as much knowledge of technical sport of swimming as possible. Subsequently, Aaron moved up into the Head Age Group position and has had many swimmers accomplish great things both in and out of the pool.

In his spare time, Aaron enjoys the outdoors.  Aaron enjoys mountain biking, hiking, camping, and of course swimming. Aaron's hobbies include, but are not limited too, playing instruments (the drums are his favorite), art and cooking.

Aaron hopes to assist all his swimmers in the sport of swimming and life. Aaron is looking to create some new friendships and grow with the team, as a team!
