Class Levels Overview

Students progress smoothly through levels of instruction, graduating to the next level when they have mastered specific objectives. Beginners progress through Levels 1, 2 and 3. Then they move to our stroke levels, starting with Freestyle, then Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly. After graduating from the Butterfly level, we recommend our year-round Menlo Mavericks program which includes a Mavericks Junior team for younger kids. We also have Waterbabies for ages 6 months to 3 years, and we offer Adult classes.

Visit our Level Description page for details.

About Evaluations

A 10-minute evaluation is required for all new students wishing to register for levels other than Waterbabies, Level 1, or Adult. This quick evaluation is necessary to assign a child to the correct class level where he or she will make the most progress and be challenged appropriately.

The evaluation takes place in the water with an experienced instructor who has the child perform a series of skills. We create a low pressure environment and look at the skills the child has naturally. We assign a level based on three factors; age, swimming ability, and responsiveness to feedback. Evaluation and level assignment are necessary before we place a student into a lesson timeslot.

Registration Overview

Swim School registration differs for currently-enrolled students and for new students. See our Registration page for step-by-step detail.

Currently-enrolled students: Before each new session, we have a 2 week priority registration period. During the first week of priority registration, call, email, or visit the swim school office to keep your current lesson time and to guarantee your enrollment. During the second week of priority registration, you can change your lesson time and add siblings or classes (depending on availability). You must contact us to register for each new session, so we highly recommended that you confirm in the first week if you want to keep to your current schedule.

New students require a level assignment evaluation and creation of an account with Menlo Swim and Sport.

For mid-session registration, you first set up your account, then schedule evaluation with a phone call or simply show up during evaluation hours. You then get a class placement quickly so you can start lessons the very next week.

For new students who wish start at the beginning of a session, you must wait until registration opens to the public to set up your account. However, you may complete your evaluation ahead of time so that when public registration opens, your level assignment is ready to go.

This method of registration provides currently-enrolled students with priority on class times and makes it easy to start mid-session.
