Bay Area Safety Academy

Menlo Swim and Sport is proud announce a new source for safety training on the Peninsula. Menlo Swim and Sport has established a Safety Academy that offers a variety of safety courses to the community, health professionals, and anyone who wants to be prepared during an emergency.

The Safety Academy's initial classes will include CPR/AED, Babysitter training, and Family Caregiver training for the community; Lifeguard, Title 22, and CA Child Care provider for health professionals; and Safety for Swim Coaches, Pet First-Aid, and Wilderness First-aid for special interests. These courses are just a few among many more that we are offering this season.

For job seekers, holding a safety certification can spruce up a resume! Take a class, get trained, get certified, and maybe save life!

Classes are held at Arrillaga Family Recreation Center, Burgess Pool, Belle Haven Pool, Onetta Harris Community Center, Arrillaga Family Gym, and we can come to your home or office with minimum enrollment.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class

Register today for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training at Menlo Swim and Sport. Learn lifesaving skills to help keep people safe in, on and around the water.

To become certified to guard or teach swimming, you must complete approximately 30 hours of training and pass practical and written exams. To enroll, you must be 15 years old (by the end of the course) or older and possess a valid photo ID.

The prerequisites include being able to swim 300 yards without stopping, demonstrating freestyle and breaststroke. You must complete a surface dive to 7'-10', retrieve a 10 pound brick, return to the surface and swim 20 yards, and exit the pool with the brick.  You must also be able to tread water for two minutes.

Upon successful completion of class, Lifeguard Certificates are valid for two years and include CPR for the Professional Rescuer (valid for two years) and First Aid (valid for two years).

Menlo Swim and Sport offers an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class that includes:

  • Lifeguard Training
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
  • Rescue Mask

May 17, 18, 19, 25, and 26, Friday 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. -> must attend all days

The cost of the course is $300.

There is a minimum of six registrants for the course to take place.  The class is limited to 12 students.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Class (LGI)

The purpose of the instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue.

Prerequisites include: At least 17 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course; And one of the following:

A current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, Successfully complete the online Orientation to the Red Cross, Successfully complete the online Orientation to the Lifeguarding course, Successfully complete the online Lifeguarding Instructor Precourse Exam (80 percent or better), Successfully complete the Precourse Session, Obtain the Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual and Lifeguarding Manual after you have successfully completed the Precourse Session.

Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
NPSF

Certified Pool/Spa Operator® Certification program has delivered more training than any other program in the pool and spa industry since 1972, resulting in more than 240,000 successful CPO® certifications in 44 countries. The NSPF® Pool & SpaOperator™ Handbook has been updated to include the most current information available.



This 2-day certification course covers 14-16 hours of information from The Handbook (provided) and includes specific local codes. Pass the open book exam and earn CPO® certification.

Spanish speaking students: Presentations will be in English, but the Handbook and exams are available in Spanish. Please contact the Service Center for more information.

CPR/AED Challenges

The CPR/AED Challenge is a competency testing of skills and knowledge associated with the CPR/AED, with no allowance for review or practice with an instructor. The purpose of a challenge is to provide individuals with the opportunity to demonstrate their skill and knowledge competency outside of the formal class setting. The participant has sole responsibility in preparing for the knowledge and skills test. Course fulfills the California Code of Regulations requirement for first aid training for individuals in public safety roles. The class is open to the public and instructors are also welcome to take this course.

Title 22: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel

The Title 22 course fulfills the California Code of Regulations requirement for first aid training for individuals in public safety roles. The class is open to the public and instructors are also welcome to take this course. Prerequisite is current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.

CPR for the Professional Rescuer

In the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course, learn the skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing or cardiac emergency. You will learn how to perform rescue breathing using resuscitation masks and bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs), care for an airway obstruction, give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by yourself or with another rescuer, and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). You will also learn how to take precautions to prevent disease transmission. The course is based on real-life rescue scenarios and lessons that reinforce decision-making skills, so you’ll be confident to respond when an emergency occurs.

This class is open to the public. Upon successful completion, you will receive an American Red Cross Universal Certificate indicating CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer valid for 2 years (1 year for lifeguards).
