Constructing the Air Dome
The Instructional pool at Burgess Park will be enclosed by an Air Dome.
Background
Air Domes are widely used commercially around the country to enclose swimming pools, tennis courts, running tracks, and even football fields. There are a number of NFL football teams that use Air Domes over their practice fields in the winter and even
the summer to keep the air temperature inside the Air Dome comfortable and manageable for the players.
The Air Dome is simply a fabric material that encloses the pool and is supported by air pressure that is forced in to keep the dome shape intact. A wire cable is attached the bottom of the dome. The wire is then attached to eye bolts that are anchored into the pool deck.
Menlo Swim and Sport began the process of constructing the Air Dome during the summer of 2006. It has been a long and rewarding process to get to the point we are right now.
Facts and Timeline
We have worked closely with The City of Menlo Park and the Menlo Park Fire Protection District to ensure that the internal Air Dome Environment and Air Dome Safety is of the highest quality.
Our architects and engineers have designed primary, secondary and tertiary safety systems. Our third level safety system is what has caused the Air Dome construction to take longer than originally anticipated. Our brilliant professionals have created a proprietary system that exceeds the standards set by the municipalities and the Air Dome manufacturer.
The tertiary back up system simply consists of tall poles that suspend a web of cables overhead to act as an internal support structure.
We have had the Air Dome in storage for about one year. The accessory components are currently under construction and should be completed within two weeks. The total onsite Air Dome construction should take one week to complete.
We plan on having the Air Dome erected by mid to late November 2008, and in place until the end of March 2009.
The Air Dome will conserve energy which in turn helps our environment. The Air Dome will also offer protection from the cold winter weather for the children who attend swimming lessons and open swimming and for the senior community who swim laps and do water aerobics.
We, along with you are anxiously awaiting the Air Dome. We thank you for your patience, encouragement and continual support.

The Mavericks Level I program will be limited to twelve swimmers for each day, practice will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 4:15 - 5:00pm. Coach Audrey Ryder will employ her patient and nurturing characteristics to open the world of swimming to these budding aquatic individuals. The program will be kept small to offer a high level of coach to swimmer feedback and interaction in a low stress and comfortable environment.
Congrats to the 24 swimmers who took part in the Candy Meet Championship held at Riconada Pool on November 1, 2008. The pouring rain and cold winds could not dash the spirits of these two dozen enthusiastic young swimmers. Way to go!
