In the News this Month:

Way to go Evan!
On March 19, after watching a San Jose Sharks game, one of our fast acting lifeguards, Evan Carlton, stepped forward to assist an unconscious man. Evan assisted another young man in performing CPR, both young men performed chest compressions and rescue breaths until paramedics could take over. When the paramedics arrived, the man who collapsed barely had a pulse and he was in the last stages of ventricular fibrillation. Had the two young men not kept doing CPR, the paramedics would have found a dead man. Evan is so humble, he did not even stay around to get praise from the bystanders; he got on the train and went home. The man, who suffered heart failure, lived and sought out Evans identity through writing an open article in the San Jose Mercury News asking for him to step forward.
We at Menlo Swim and Sport are proud of our lifeguard Evan, a young man who showed professionalism and maturity under pressure. Way to go Evan!

Cool Tips for the Hot Summer Sun
Keep your self hydrated. Drink plenty of water! Sodas can be tasty and sports drinks are good for you, but those drinks have a lot of sugar and salt. Do not forget about the simplicity and purity of water. To add a zest or kick to your water you can add a lemon wedge or one to two mashed up strawberries for a splash of taste. Water does wonders keeping you hydrated during the warm summer months.
Wear protective clothing. Menlo Swim and Sport's pro-shop sells Radicool protective clothing and TYR rash guards, both are water wear with built in SPF protection.
Sunscreen! To avoid sunburns while swimming, wear sunscreen! Apply waterproof sunscreen 20-30 minutes prior to entering the pool. Try to swim early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the greatest potential of over sun exposure between 11am to 4pm. Make sure to reapply your waterproof sunscreen every 90 minutes after being in the water. Protect your scalp from the sun; be sure to wear a swim cap.
