Monday 4:00 – 5:15pm, Running and Strength
Running and strength training workouts take place in and around Burgess Park. The park offers many grass fields, bike paths, and dirt trails close by. Meet at the entrance to the Burgess Park pools.
Wednesday 4:00 – 5:15pm, Biking
Our cycling sessions are held at Bayfront Park, located at the east end of Marsh Road in Menlo Park. Bayfront Park offers flats, hills, pavement, dirt, and NO CARS. The site allows cycling development including bike handling skills, bio-mechanics, and conditioning. A large parking lot will be used to practice criterium skills and a bike path will be used to simulate long touring rides. Other sites will be used on occasion and any special field-trip rides will be scheduled in advance.
Swimming
Junior Triathletes are encouraged to get their swim instruction and training with our Mavericks youth swim program. This will allow our junior triathletes to get the highest level of professional swim instruction in an age and ability appropriate setting. The Mavericks swim program offers 4 different ability levels every weekday. Please check the Menlo Mavericks Swim Team! web pages, choose the level that best suits your athlete and pick the day that best fits your schedule. Once you are registered for the Junior Triathlon Team you can add on any day of swimming for just an additional $25 for a full 10 weeks.

Gears: To enable the courses to be ridden it is mandatory that the bikes have a minimum of 10 gears, particularly for Level 2 and Level 3 athletes. We would prefer the bike to have 24 gears which would include a triple front chain ring for better success on hilly terrain. For Level 1, kids will learn proper shifting and gear selection so gears are very useful but not mandatory.
Brakes: Brakes on all the bikes MUST be in excellent working condition. This includes proper cable tension and fresh brake pads. The downhills can be challenging and safety is dependant upon functional gear.
Tires: The tires should be fresh with enough tread to grip the earth around turns. The tires should be inflated to the level stated on the side of the tire wall.
Tubes: A spare tube should be carried on all bikes in a seat-bag stored beneath and behind the saddle along with tire levers for tire removal. Punctured tubes are common and they can easily be dealt with if you have proper gear. Cycling training includes learning to quickly change a flat out on the road.
Pump: A frame-mounted pump should be on every bike to refill tubes with air if they need to be replaced.
Water Bottle and Cage: Each bike should be equipped with a water bottle held in place by a water bottle cage. The rides can be long and hot, so proper hydration is a necessity.
Helmets: Helmets must fit snugly and be positioned level on the wearer's head. It is mandatory that some sort of mechanism is included on the back of the helmet that ensures a snug fit and prevents the helmet from sliding around once in place. Helmets do wear out and a fresh one is suggested every couple of years. Check for cracks and replace immediately if discovered. No rider will be allowed to participate without a proper helmet.
