Frequently Asked Questions

Swim School

Q: What should I bring to a swim lesson?

A: We provide fins and learning toys. You need to bring:

  • Swimsuit
  • Towel
  • Swim Cap (Advised for those with long hair that can get into the eyes and mouth while swimming or for those children who seem to get cold in the pool. A cap helps to keep heat from escaping the body through the head.)
  • Goggles (Optional, up to the parent, child and instructor. At some point all children will learn to swim with and without goggles.)
  • Hair Rubber Band (Advised for those who have long hair that can get into the eyes and mouth while swimming and who don’t wish to wear a cap.)
  • Swim Diaper (NECESSARY for all children under the age of 3 years old. Must be a snug fitting, re-usable swim diaper. Swim Diapers will be for sale at the pool but can also be purchased online.).
  • Sunscreen (Please make sure to give the sunscreen 10-15 minutes to soak into the skin before entering the pool. If put on immediately before pool entry or while already wet, the lotion will wash off and can run into eyes and mouth causing severe discomfort.)
Q: What if my child cries or is afraid?

A: Our teachers are trained to deal with a fearful swimmer. Getting over fear is a major part of swim lessons. Our deck manager will be available to assist you in such cases if need be. If you need help getting your child into the pool, ask our staff for assistance; we will gladly help get your child in the water.

Sometimes tears can have their root not in fear but in basic separation anxiety. This is part of the learning process as well. If you feel your child may be experiencing separation anxiety rather than a genuine fear of the water,  it is best to keep your distance during the lesson. Removing yourself from the child’s sight during the lesson may be required in certain situations. In such cases, the child will usually calm down when the parent is out of view and be able to focus and rely on the teacher for instruction and help.

Our instructors are not only trained to help your child become water safe but trained to aid in overcoming fear. Independence and relying on a non-parental figure can be scary at first. The deck manager is there for your support while the instructor is there for the child’s support.

Q: What if my child is sick?

A: If your child has a fever, or any stomach or digestion problems, please keep them home from their lesson. If they have a runny nose or a cough, swimming can actually be good for them while helping to clear their sinuses and often times make them feel better. You do not have to alert the swim school if you will miss a lesson due to sickness.

Q: Do you offer make-ups or credits for missed classes?

A: We do not offer refunds, credits, or make-ups for missed classes. If your child is unable to attend, we look forward to seeing your child at the next scheduled lesson. Consistency is one of the keys to our program. We ask that you do your best to regularly bring your child to swim lessons. If we cancel a class for reasons which are within our control, we will apply a credit to your account which will be deducted from your next month’s charges.

Q: What is a Deck Manager?

A: Our deck Manager is a staff member who oversees classes on any given shift. They are a customer and instructor support representative assisting clients while overseeing all the ongoing lessons during their shift.

Q: How do I contact my child’s teacher?

A: Please speak with the deck manager at the time of your lesson. He/She will take notes of the conversation and have the instructor get back to you at their convenience. Please try to avoid starting conversation with your child’s instructor before, during or after their 30 minute lesson. Each lesson is scheduled back-to-back meaning there is no good time to speak to an instructor during the time they are in the water teaching.

Q: Can I drop my child off for a lesson and pick them up afterwards?

A: Each child must have a responsible adult present while participating in their 30 minute lesson. It can be yourself or someone you have pre-arranged to watch over the child in your absence. In case of emergency, each child should have an adult there for them.
