Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my 5-year-old is ready for camp? We feel strongly that camp readiness doesn't just mean age. Both for water safety and camp enjoyment, we look for maturity in behavior with groups, empathy and awareness of others, plus a strong desire to join in. Camp Menlo is very active and team-oriented so the ability to follow directions and play hard is key.

Menlo Swim and Sport is proud to announce a new camp offering this Holiday season:

2011 Holiday Camp Menlo : Menlo Action Academy

Too often, parents must choose between academic lessons and pure sports programs. What if we put them together? Clearly there’s a need to help kids become and stay active, and there’s always a need for lessons in teamwork and social norms.

With decades of experience coaching and mentoring youth in sports we saw an opportunity to make exercise mean more than winning, strength, or coordination. Developing kids into well rounded people and healthy adults is the most valuable contribution we can make to a community. So we’re adding the Menlo Action Academy to our Menlo Swim and Sport family of programs to do just that.

We have developed a camp that uses games and physical exercise to teach personal skills and develop character.

Studies Have Shown that Exercise is Critically Important for Learning

Exercise performed in a playful environment is fun for children and play is the way they learn. Learning through physical activity is core for a child’s social, emotional, and intellectual development. In Menlo Action Academy Camp we use physical activity to:

  • Develop personal and social behavior
  • Cultivate interpersonal skills
  • Develop motor skills
  • Explore the decision-making process
  • Expand an understanding of and respect for others

As children play, they learn about themselves, their environment, people and the world around them. They learn to solve problems and to get along with others. They enhance their creativity and develop leadership skills and healthy personalities.

How it Works

We create a fun, supportive, and safe environment in which physical activities are undertaken surrounding a social or personal character development topic such as:

  • Trust
  • Bullying
  • Cooperation
  • Listening and following instructions
  • Friendship
  • Respect
  • Problem solving
  • Teamwork
  • Accepting others’ ideas
  • Sharing space
  • Communication

The physical activities are preceded and followed by a discussion of the development topic. The activities are guided and the instruction includes how to correctly execute and improve on sport and exercise movement.

Limited to 24 participants, 5-10 years old.
